Two years, from building your first circuit and recording your first multimeter reading to a Power System Technologist commissioning real protection and telecom gear in the field. Full time completes Winter 2029 (24 months), and part time completes Summer 2030 (30 months).
Level 1
Online and hands-on
You'll pick up the tools, build your own circuits and devices, test them, and prove the theory and fundamentals of electricity. You'll build a generator. You'll hack into radio communications. You'll program your own microcontroller. And you'll interconnect with remote P&C and Telecom equipment, configure and test it. Your mentor guides you through 17 projects, each one building on the last.
Level 1 needs a workbench, your own micro electrical lab.
Electrical measurements: DVM, oscilloscope, and clamp-on ammeter
DC circuit analysis, capacitors, and inductors
AC circuit analysis and frequency response
Transformers and high voltage
Build your own generator
3-phase power
Hack radio comms
Secret data channels
Microcontrollers
Electronics and power, from millivolts to megavolts
Test equipment build
Utility power systems
Protection and control 1
Telecommunications 1
Protection and control 2
Telecommunications 2
Mastery project: a DIY utility power system
Level 2
On the job, and paid
This is where it gets real. You join an industry partner as a paid Student Tech and follow major projects, which could take you all over Canada and the US. You'll learn on real equipment under the direction of experienced techs. Your industry partner covers the travel. With your mentor's support, you'll show you can:
Follow engineering and maintenance standards and complete test records accurately
Assess system and personal safety risks and apply the right mitigations
Perform maintenance on protection systems, including feeder, line, bus, transformer, and reactor
Safely take on-load, in-service voltage and current measurements of protection and control circuits
Use a Doble power system simulator for relay testing
Primary injection of current transformers
Testing and commissioning of new protection, control, and telecom equipment
Fibre optic splicing and OTDR
Bit error rate testing of new communication channels
Maintenance on communication systems, including power line carrier, VHF/UHF radios, microwave radio, and battery banks
Document design changes and mark up engineering drawings
